Starting jiu-jitsu can feel unfamiliar because the movement, terminology and close-contact nature of the sport are new to many people. The goal of a first visit is to understand the environment—not to prove anything.
Ask about attire first
Before arriving, confirm whether the session is gi or no-gi and what clothing is appropriate. Remove jewelry and follow the club’s hygiene and mat rules.
Expect instruction before intensity
Classes commonly involve technical explanation, partner practice and controlled application. The exact structure depends on the instructor and session.
Tell the coach you are new
That gives the instructor useful context for pairing, explanations and expectations. There is no advantage in hiding that it is your first class.
